Prejudice is a horrible, horrible thing.

I refer, of course, to this stubborn hatred of Pumpkin Ales:

And pumpkin-flavored comestibles generally. Can’t get enough of the stuff… what’s that?  Oh, by all means: feel free to vehemently disagree with me on that.  I’m well aware that most of you think that I’m one of the monsters that subjects the rest of you to this seasonal horror every year.

  1. You know, I haven’t had a Pumpkin Ale, but I would be willing to try one.

Some time ago, I was presented with a can of Apple Soda. My first thought was to reject it out of hand. Then I realized that I liked Apple Juice and Orange/Grape Soda, so I tried an Apple Soda and I have been a fan ever since. The moral of the story is to try something before dismissing it.

    1. Unless you don’t like pumpkin.

I’m not opposed to fruit in beer. I’ll offer Pyramid’s Apricot Ale and the various flavors of Lambic as examples of it working quite nicely.
But pumpkin ale is an abomination unto proper zymurgy.

        1. Gator, do you mean pumpkin, or do you mean the cinnamon-nutmeg-allspice-clove mixture that gets added to pumpkin?

The combination makes good pies, but .. the same combination makes good pies with yams, sweet taters, or most squash varietals too.

What it doesn’t make is good *anything else*.

    1. Did I read that correctly? My eyes aren’t so good anymore, but it looked like celery soda? I gotta be imagining that…..

      1. It is celery soda, yes.

From what I’ve heard, it’s .. better than it sounds.
        .
Haven’t seen it “in the wild” yet, and .. ordering soda via Amazon seems slightly more insane than I’m willing to admit to.
        .
That said, if you *do* decide to order, be sure to click on one of Moe’s amazon links first so he gets the credit.

        1. I was curious and tried it. I did not think it was any better than it sounded. It was many years ago when I was young, though, maybe I’d like it better now that I’m older? Not particularly inclined to find out.

Dr. Brown’s Black Cherry was awesome way back when because it contained a lot of actual expensive cherry juice. Doesn’t anymore.

  2. I dunno, they’re probably an appropriate beverage to consume while eating a McRib…

  3. There are a lot of weird things done to beer. I’m less of a fan of the actual pumpkin, and more of a fan of the various spices that are usually used in various pumpkin ales, though.

    Grapefruit IPAs for the win!

  4. Don’t much like beer, but love pumpkin; have a great Pumpkin Cranberry Bread recipe if you’d like to bake a knockout version–basically dessert!
