Quote of the Day, I’m Probably Just As Bad As All The Other ‘Insiders’ edition.

I just dislike meddling in primaries any more than I absolutely have to. But this made me laugh:

Incidentally, after months and months of Republican “insiders” predicting that Trump was about to implode at any second, they finally came around this week to the idea that he has a legit shot at the nomination. And of course, as soon as they did, he had his first real string of bad polls in Iowa. Never underestimate an insider’s ability to be wrong in new and different ways!

Indeed. Indeed. It’s a fair cop…

  1. Eh, after the complete and total feces sandwich I had to eat when they made me vote for someone I swore I’d never vote for, John effing McCain, I hope that if Trump somehow manages to get the nomination (or anyone, really, that Karl Rove disapproves of) that they enjoy every last bite of theirs. And if that happens, and they choose to try to torpedo them in the general, or even just not wholeheartedly support them, there will never be a vote from me for an establishment guy ever again. I’ll be in ‘burn it down and start over’ mode until they’re all gone.

I do not care that Trump’s not a conservative – he’s exactly as much of one as McCain and Romney both were, so they have zero excuses there.
    .
Now, my preference is that Cruz comes out of this with the nomination, as I cannot in good conscience vote for Carson. But barring that, making the GOP establishment squeal seems like a good secondary goal.

    1. Well spoken.

And as aside, I remember that neither person who won in Iowa for either 2008 and 2012 got the nomination. Why the heck Iowa still matters is beyond me….

      1. The Idiots Out Wandering Around have surely burned their 15 minutes of fame ..

I think it’s significant that the Red State Gathering appears to have replaced the Ames Straw Poll as the first event of silly season .. Iowa is no longer “first and first”, and join New Hampshire in merely being “first”.

    2. Where I live your vote for a republican presidential candidate is totally pointless, which is kind of terrible, but it did mean that I could refuse to vote for McCain with a clear conscience. So there’s that.

      1. Yep, and .. once you realize you *don’t* have to eat the excrement-and-lettuce on lies sandwich ..

  2. I may be incorrect, but I think that this is one of those very rare protest elections. Let me explain.

Back when I was in school I learned that third parties in American politics were the party of the big idea or the party of the big personality. When those parties got onto the national scene it was because the usual suspects in the major parties were not listening, and this was how voters hit them over the head with a 2×4 to get their attention.
    .
    Right.
    .
Both major parties have had outliers and outsiders come racing in and stealing a lot of wind from the usual candidates. And the outsiders do represent parts of the “big personality” and “big idea” strains in American politics.
    .
(Seriously – no one is going to say Donald Trump is not a big personality and that Bernie Sanders is not pushing a big idea.)
    .
My take has always been that the vast bulk of voters want the government to work. They want the roads paved, the mail delivered, and the navy at sea – to break it down into symbols that is what most want. Otherwise just leave them alone already.
    .
Right now we are in a set series of events with uncertainty overseas, on the border, and economically. And I think a lot of voters are seeing two parties that want to do everything they can to put first Big Money Interests, the Concerns of Foreign Nations and International Groups, and the Well-Being of Non-Citizens over those who Actually Are Citizens.
    .
So yeah, I’m getting to the point that I am not wondering why the outsiders are doing so well. I am just wondering if Bernie Sanders can find it in him to update William Jennings Bryan’s ‘Cross of Gold’ speech and if Donald Trump is going to say something about the Federal Reserve doing the equivalent of ‘Free Silver’ with the economy.

    (Sorry to be so long-winded.)

  3. I should let you know that I appreciate you staying out of the primaries. The sites that don’t are so divisive.

      1. I’ll … well, I won’t *dissent* because I’m also mostly glad Moe’s not picking favorites or trying to sink stinkers .. but I don’t think he’s staying out per se ..
        .
Moe appears to be taking a “catch ’em being good” approach .. works with three-year-olds, so probably works with presidential candidates…

The Jindal mention in the Louisiana political weirdness thread for one example.
