My RedState post on UnitedHealthCare and Obamacare is up.

Found here. Short version… well, I’m in a bad mood tonight, so at least I got to take it out on somebody that deserved it. And God knows health care insurers deserve to be yelled at.

  1. I’ve crossed paths with UHC three times .. had a co-worker who was a former UHC employee, he described a severely dysfunctional work environment, with all the problems of a shop that had grown far too fast for process to keep up with demand .. became customer when HR decided our old plan was too expensive (imagine our joy) .. and got an earful about their claims process from the doctor when I mentioned that HR had moved us.
    .
While they seem to be very money-seeking, as a company .. all three experiences above confirm this – the co-worker said expenses were very tightly controlled, the doctor said they paid late and less than other plans, the doctors I could see – in their network – were fewer, farther between, and all were younger – but they did seem to do all of the things insurance companies should do .. like taking and paying claims.

Whether they sincerely believed the Obamacare hype or whether they just saw it as a potential to score *big*, they’re .. idiots at best.

  2. *waves* Hi! Current UHC customer here. This was because Aetna got too problematic. Mind you that a couple of years back, UHC did raise my premiums twice and took away a plan I liked because of Obamacare.
    .
So although I am happy with the service (They actually have done good by me through two surgical procedures), I’m not exactly happy about the fact that they were blind as hell with this whole thing.

  3. Seems like an appropriate place for an update.
    .
Quick recap: we adopted out oldest from the foster system with a large number of health problems. Because of this, she’s on Medicaid until she turns 18. But we’ve also kept private insurance on her as well. We’re being forced into the Obamacare exchange, and there were early signs that this unusual situation would be problematic.
    .
This is now confirmed. It is actually against the law for the exchange to sell us insurance for her because she is already covered by a federal program.
The state correctly notes that they’d have to be stupid to actually enforce that provision.
But the insurance companies are emphatically NOT going to step into that beartrap on just the say-so of a bureaucrat.
So the law does not allow me to be responsible.

    1. Also, her surgery has been pushed back indefinitely. Our local docs are not happy about this.
And being covered solely by medicaid will make it very difficult to travel across the country for specialized care.

      1. Wow, what a mess!
        .
Any chance y’all could incorporate and buy a “group plan” that’d include her as a kid?
