So, poll: the new Star Trek. Suck, or not-suck?

I just read a bunch of articles that set off warning bells in my head. Not so much the political stuff – Trek is one of those IPs that gets a lot of mutually-exclusive, broad-spectrum fan love – but because there may be cussin’ and maybe a bare rear or two*. Which is, when you think about it, a rather unusual thing to have happen in that particular series.

This is the point where I would write Not that I’m a prude or anything – but, Hell: maybe I am a prude, when it comes to Star Trek. Which would be kind of funny, really.

*It all has to do with streaming services, apparently.

  1. I’m afraid I have to slide my expectations into “suck” category. All I’ve been able to learn is that it’s Star Trek, is going to be on a streaming service instead of TV, that “cussin’ and maybe a bare rear or two” and finally that it’s going to be “progressive”.

    And that’s it.

We don’t know anything about plot, about cast and characters (except that casting is still ongoing, apparently, even though it’s supposed to premier in January), the setting beyond what can be gathered from it being Star Trek, or even what timeline it’s in: Roddenberry original, Abrams alternate, or something entirely new.

If this is what we’ve been told about it, I don’t think it augurs well.

  2. Er, which new Trek? The latest Abram… oh, sorry. “Kelvin Timeline” film or the CBS series?

  3. The original Trek certainly had it’s share of sexuality (green dancing girls and whatnot) and wasn’t above using the occasional curse word.

If it’s handled with a certain amount of care and discretion, it could be okay. Though as I said in a previous post, episodic TV really isn’t my thing anymore, so it’s doubtful I’ll follow the new series anyway, unless people really start to rave over it.

  4. I am a huge fan of classic Star Trek. For the most part (aside from quite a few Next Generation and a smattering of Deep Space Nine episodes) I have been disappointed with the newer series.

I also have not heard much about the new series. From your brief description (cussing and bare bottoms) on the face of it, at least, I do not really go one way or another. Could be good or could be bad.

If, as one commentor mentions, they go in a ‘progressive’ direction, well then I expect it to suck. Not only do you essentially tell half your potential audience to go pound sand, but you are also often setting ideology over telling a good story about interesting characters. We have numerous examples that this usually does not bode well.

  5. “Progressive”? Uh-oh …

If the Trigglypuff girl is cast as a Horta member of Starfleet, then I might watch it. But if the writers are SJWs, then … no.
