Tweet of the Day, …Wait, This is REAL edition?

Apparently.

We could use more of these taking up space in the countryside, honestly.  Just to say that we did it. Or to confuse our descendants: either would do.

PS: Dude’s apparently still widely worshiped as a god throughout the People’s Republic of China.  And why is that happening, in an ostensibly atheist nation? Because shut up, that’s why.

  1. If we really want to confuse our descendants, let’s build a 200′ tall statue of Squirrel Girl, with no context. “Her name was Doreen. She was feared by all.”

  2. Because: China.
    .
The Chi-Coms seized the mandate of heaven. Attempting to nullify its existence would only be an attack on their own power.

  3. Pretty darn impressive. I am actually really surprised it survived the cultural revolution.

    1. Looked into this a bit. The statue was just completed (which explains my thought on the cultural revolution.) 1.5 Billion Yuan was invested in the project.

The subject Guan Yu or Guan Gong was also a historical figure. He seems to have been a warlord/warrior. He is revered/deified in three separate religious traditions Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.

I may be missing some of the cultural cues, but he seems to be credited with deeds and appearances after his death, maybe like the concept of the intercession of saints.

Regardless, he seems to be widely popular in China.

      1. Read Romance of the Three Kingdoms and you’ll get a rundown of the virtues he embodies. Now the giant statue isn’t how he’s generally portrayed, but with the scale they’re working with, they have to obey laws of physics.
