The ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’ teaser trailer.

OK, this looks seriously trippy:

…It’s got a kind of retro-comic feel to it, no?  A lot of people are saying that Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets looks evocative of The Fifth Element, which is perfectly true – but I’m getting a kind of old-style Heavy Metal comic vibe here.  The actual comic, not the movie.  It’s definitely shows a Eighties comic aesthetic: interesting-looking alien races, busy starport/orbital facility scenes that emphasize the idea that there’s a larger universe out there, a cavalier assumption of pop-cultural stasis… it’s all there, really.

I look forward to seeing the next trailer.  I’m also looking forward to seeing the movie in general, although I don’t have a clue to who these people originally were, or how they differed from the movie versions. I’m probably going to keep it that way, too.  That way I’ll have a take on the flick that’s unencumbered with expectations.

  1. Fifth Element borrowed alot from the Valerian graphic novel in it’s visuals. Not surprising since it was Luc Bessons favorite comic book growing up.

    .

Yeah, that’s sort of my quick take on this too: I don’t get much sense that there’s much of a plot to go along with those pretty visuals.

  3. The lead actor looks to be way too young to play the stereo typical square jaw brute of Valerian. Not sure if they’re going to explain Laureline actually came from Medieval France.

The original comic artists were hired to help make The Fifth Element. He would’ve wanted to adapt Laureline & Valerian back at that time, but it’s simply impossible as 90% of the cast and background characters are aliens. Now, they have enough technology to do it right.

  4. I read that several aliens designed for the 5th element were not used due to the cost, but there being used here.
