Is the Valerian & Laureline comic series worth reading before I go see the film?

I know that I’ll probably see the movie when it comes out, but I’ve never read the Valerian & Laureline comics.  Are they any good? Will I need to read them to figure out what’s going on?

  1. ComiXology has 12 or so volumes available. I downloaded volume 1 this weekend. If you can get past the 60’s era storytelling, It is a ripping yarn. I do not have much experience with European comics other then Judge Dredd and the random volume of Astrix and Tin Tin. This does scratch my sci fi comic itch though.
