Wait a second. Since when have the Rolling Stones had any problems of a magnitude that were sufficient to justify this song? They’ve been on top of the world since before I was born.

The history of the song is pretty cool, you should look it up. My favorite cover is Ciara’s version.
I shall. In the morning. 🙂
Well, they’ve certainly proven William Blake was FOS. Otherwise, Keith Richards would be the wisest man on earth.
.
As to the song, I’m pretty sure heroin was involved. But really, nihilism isn’t much better. And a lot of talented and successful people feel like frauds who are about to be exposed. That probably doesn’t lend itself to cheerfulness.
Even the most “successful” people experience depression. For those in Entertainment it’s nearly required: I’ve never met a happy comedian.
Strange enough, Keith Richards and the boys are generally somewhat sober when in studio and on the clock. I remember he saying that drugs doesn’t increases creativity, it just take more time to lay down the tracks they need, which cost money.
