Apparently they’re talking to her about it.
Melissa McCarthy may be ready to help some poor unfortunate souls in Disney’s live-action version of “The Little Mermaid.”
Sources tell Variety that while the deal is not yet completed, McCarthy is in early talks to play the sea witch Ursula in the live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid.”
My first reaction was, “Oh, God, please stop making these things.” Disney ignored that, of course; these things are stone-cold money makers. My second reaction was, “Can she at least sing?” Disney will ignore that, too, if it’s an issue. You can always rent a nice voice for these sorts of projects. My third, and most amused reaction then came up to bat; and it was — of course — “This is going to annoy a lot of people who are not actually the Mouse’s target demographic.”
And lo! It did.
Look: unless you’re a parent of two kids in the right age range (girls, as always, preferred) Disney ain’t real interested in your opinions about their casting choices. And if you are a parent of two, etc etc etc then the Mouse is still aiming for a particular demographic range. They frankly figure that they know more on the topic than you do.
And if we’re being brutally honest about it…
…they might have a point. As per my first reaction above. Because my God, how the money rolls in.
Rebel Wilson seems a better choice. We know she’s at least good enough to be auto-tuned through Pitch Perfect.
