I got a lot more tolerant of this album when I realized it was bleak folk. And it doesn’t get much bleaker than this. This is the closest thing to a horror song that Springsteen has ever written.

Let’s be fair now. Pretty much everything Springsteen has ever done has horror at its base.
Starting with his singing.
But the themes of Born in the USA, Born to Run, Glory Days, 57 Channels, etc. are not happyfun time. Sure, he moans them with nihilistic ennui, but the core is there. You could easily score an existential horror movie with his stuff, especially if you pitch-shifted to minor key.
“Cadillac Ranch”, despite the rockabilly overlay, is about death and dying; a progression from a young man burying his family to dealing with his time to die.
Not knocking it, ‘s just what Bruce does, covering very dark topics with inappropriately upbeat song.

Seconded. Even his album of folk covers is full of death and depression.
To be fair, that’s not exactly unusual in the folk genre. 🙂

You don’t say….
Folk – just like the blues but in a major key …

Chicken and egg, really.
Is Bruce attracted to folk because of his soiled soul or is his soul stained from early exposure to folk?
I don’t know, but to be safe, I generally minimize my contact with both.
