This ZORRO: THE CHRONICLES video game trailer looks appealing.

I’m always down for a Zorro game. Sneaking, swordplay, dramatic entrances – this could appeal. Although it’s based on a show I haven’t watched? I dunno if that’s going to make a difference. Still, even if it is maybe my kids will still like it.

  1. I’m down to buckle the swash, but that game looks horrible.

It’s never a good sign when the trailer makes a game look repetitious. And swashbuckling is the antithesis of repetitious.

The sound design set my teeth on edge. I don’t mind Mario repeatedly crying out “Woohoo”, but the way they were doing the same with Zorro just didn’t work for me.

It’s very hard to pull off cheese without being earnest. The exaggerated animation style clearly does not lend itself to that. The worst case is that it goes for pretentious camp (redundant, I know), and that looks more likely than not.

  2. When in doubt, go to the source.

I ‘member not if I’ve mentioned it here, but it’s worth bringing up again – the original Zorro story that was expanded into a novel is a masterpiece, especially so if, when reading, you voice Zorro internally as Antonio Banderas (naturally) and the Sargeant who is his main foil as Slowpoke Gonzales from the classic cartoons.

Additionally, I have not tracked down actual copies of the latter Zorro tales, but the list of titles found here is comedy gold, particularly when voiced internally ala Phil Hartman doing Troy McClure

The only question is if “Zorro lays a ghost” or “Zorro’s hot tamales” is the more amusing title.

    Also RIP Phil Hartman.

Also also F*ck you Andy Dick.
