I do want Civ II. Every version of Civilization since then has not thrilled my soul. I doubt Civilization 7 will, either. Is this… is this the triggering event that will prove, once and for all, that I am old?

If you haven’t felt like that since Pirates! was remade (poorly), I don’t know what to tell you.
I think Civ4 was the pinnacle for me. I gave 5 several tries, but it felt like something was missing. Although, was it 2 or 3 that had the leader units at the beginning of the game? Those were fun to expend in multiplayer games as scouts with custom names.
Civ II is what I fell in love with, but Civ IV Beyond the Sword had the most replay and interesting scenarios. I have spent way, way, way too much of my life playing that version of Civ.
I tried to get into Civ V, but just couldn’t make the leap to get really interested in it.
Cut my teeth on 2, but played 3 the most. Biggest flaw in the earlier versions was lack of nation borders, the stupid AI would plop a city down in any random open space and mess up your cities. Bought 6 on steam deal for super cheap last year, really enjoyed it.
My first exposure was CivNet(basically 1.5) still had the square tiles. My first LANparty game with Red Alert. Good times.
I enjoyed Civ 6 quite a bit, but I may be biased as I worked on it.
