I was reminded of this song by Facebook. I still quote “Whaddya mean I don’t support your system? I go to court when I have to” from time to time. Not that I was that much of a headbanger. Ozzy/Black Sabbath was as about hard as I went.

Ah, Dave Mustaine. For my money, at his peak, his work was way more substantive than Metalica’s and usually more more musically sophisticated. But Metalica’s Black album was a singular piece of work that he just couldn’t match (and as we later learned, neither could Metalica). Euthenasia is probably the best Megadeth album for overall quality (writing, performances, production), if you’re interested in hearing more. I also have a soft spot for one of Megadeth’s one off singles “99 ways to die” from that era. The more recent stuff is not terrible but not anywhere near his best work. (Cryptic Writings was more mainstream, Risk was an experiment with pop-ish songwriting, The World Needs a Hero put me to sleep, The System Has Failed is pretty good with a few clunkers that should have been cut, and I’ve not listened to the albums that came after that)
I’ll dissent and say it was Master of Puppets he couldn’t match. (And neither could Metallica, which is why they stripped all the progressive elements out of their music, turned the bass down to a click, and went straight alternative for the Black Album.)
But Mustaine was talented in his own right. And he’s grown more as a person, IMHO.
Harder than me. Hardest stuff in my active collection is Meat Loaf, Led Zeppelin, The Who, and The Offspring.
