The ‘The Mummy Reborn’ trailer.

I admit that The Mummy Reborn appears to be cheesy and low-budget. But maybe a high budget was ultimately the mistake that the Tom Cruise Mummy made? We’re not talking high-concept, here.

The 1999 Mummy — or, as my wife just called it: the good Mummy — had by all accounts a lower production budget, and yet it was a commercial success that spawned a number of sequels, at least one of which was actually watchable. Maybe it’s the Cheese that is the secret. Embrace the fact that you’re making a horror movie with a somewhat absurd premise and a lot of chewed scenery. Drink that in.

And I say that as somebody who liked the Cruise Mummy well enough. Although it clearly as wasn’t as good as the good one.
