Viking mead-hall in Orkney!

Maybe.

Archaeologists have found what could be a Viking drinking hall during a dig in Orkney. The site, at Skaill Farmstead in Westness, Rousay, is believed to date back to the 10th Century and may have been used by the chieftain Sigurd. Stone walls, benches, pottery and a fragment of a Norse bone comb were found during the excavation.

Via Facebook. OK, it might not actually be a mead-hall. Maybe they just drank ale there. But I hang with people who groove to the idea of mead halls, starting with my wife; so it’s a mead-hall. I’m sure that nobody there would have objected if somebody had visited and brought with them some mead, so there you go.

  1. Who in their right mind is going to OBJECT if someone carrying mead with them drops in for a visit?

I’d have the word MEAD burned into my welcome mat in every language I could think of.
