DOWNTOWN ABBEY wins weekend, gets $31M domestic opening.

I’ve never watched an episode, but: cool. That’s a nice treat for a bunch of fans who were probably just happy that they were getting a movie made from their favorite show. Especially since it this movie makes enough money then the fans will get another DOWNTOWN ABBEY flick.

You would think that in this day and age, the best place for a feature movie based on a popular TV series would be on a streaming service, right? But no, this weekend’s $31M opening of Focus Features and Carnival Films’ Downton Abbey continues to underscore the power of the big screen in its ability to generate money on lower budget fare in a digital explosive world. Downton‘s overseas total jumped to $30.8M, putting this $20M production (before P&A) at a running total of $61.8M WW.

One interesting nugget from the story above: the movie doesn’t do much business after 8 PM. Its fanbase doesn’t stay up very late, you see. Which makes the way that the theaters are bringing them in for this one even more impressive.

PS: What? No, it’s a genre film from a genre that I don’t watch, but that’s no reason to poke its fans with any sort of pointy sticks. It’s cool when you get a movie that you didn’t think that you’d get, and it turns out to be good. I’m not about to step on that.
