Hard to excerpt, for reasons which might become obvious later.
They skulked through the abandoned sewers beneath the town, with only a slight shift in the fetid, sea-rank air to mark their passage. Darkness was their companion, for down here no ray of light from the sunlit lands above would dare venture. And darkness was a welcome companion, too, for all five of the skulkers had their own reasons for avoiding the pitiless gaze of the sun.
Even in a world wracked by apocalypse and magic, time marches on; so while the journey seemed endless, the skulkers’ eventually reached their destination. The humans who had built these sewers had included rooms from which to descend from the surface world to the Stygian depths below. It was to one of these rooms that the five had traveled, and now patiently waited for nightfall, and the chance to burst free from the dark and traverse the moon-haunted ruins above.
There were five skulkers, but not all of the same sort. While all five walked on their hind legs and could speak human tongues, two had the snouts of hyenas and two more the teeth of sharks. The fifth might have passed for human, save for the grey-light glow of her eyes and the strange sigils inscribed on her flesh. Like the others, she wore a black hood and cape that seemed almost to breathe on its own, and her staff was a tangled mess of carvings and runes that shifted when not looked at directly.
