Mumford & Sons have some enjoyable bits, but … they seem, to me anyway, a bit .. engineered.

What I mean is .. they seem almost designed to look like they’ll appeal to hipsters .. but actually have wider mass appeal.

For an older example, I submit the Crash Test Dummies .. who were designed to appeal to the grunge-heads, but were actually designed to appeal to broad markets …

This is hardly new – see also Milli Vanilli for a rather extreme example.

Getting back on track .. Mumford & Sons are pretty listenable .. almost despite their marketing placement.
