Short version: WEIRD: THE AL YANKOVIC STORY is like finding a diamond in a dung heap.
Slightly longer version: this movie shouldn’t work, but it does. It’s bizarre and constantly on the verge of totally going off the rails, but somehow it never quite crashes. Some people online are asking whether or not WEIRD: THE AL YANKOVIC STORY should have been released in theaters, but I don’t know if that was really ever on the table. I mean, this is a flicks for hardcore Weird Al fans. There are more of us than you think, but are there enough to justify a full theatrical release?

PS: I’m surprised that Madonna isn’t suing.
wrt madonna: two things. First, it’s *clearly* a case of parody. Second, at her stage in life, getting an attention bump from the younger generation is probably a good thing.
I watched it. Some. I left partway through. I suspect that it was a much mroe enjoyable film for those who are actually inclined to watch celerity biopics of the variety that this was parodying. I didn’t have that level of investment in the source material.
At her age, can she turn down the free publicity?
Weird is .. yeah, a very carefully engineered stunt, an impending train wreck that never quiiiite goes off the rails….
It’s good, it’s accessible by non-fans, but the more you know about Al and his career, the better it gets.
I was a little disappointed a few of my favorites (“Pancreas”) didn’t make it into the film, but what it includes and alludes to is solid.
