New York Senate Drama! Showdown! Conflict! Pay Raises!

And nary a word on the subject of same-sex marriage bills.

And here I thought that opportunities to report on the NY Senate’s shenanigans had passed, once Espada flip-flopped back to being a Democrat.  I was wrong:

Elite get fat pay hikes amid Senate stalemate
Democrats reward key staff with up to $32,000 while hitting GOP

ALBANY — Eleven of the state Senate’s highest-paid staffers received raises of up to $32,000 when it appeared likely Democrats would lose control of the chamber during the five-week leadership fight.

The combined increases will cost taxpayers $200,000 annually.

[snip]

Because many of the raises were backdated, staffers are paid the additional cash in a lump sum, said Jennifer Freeman, spokeswoman to state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. As a result, staffers expected fat paychecks of thousands of dollars in backdated raises at the exact time that Sampson was accusing Senate Republicans of stalling legislation in an attempt to seize the spoils of majority leadership.

I’d like to note two things about this:

  1. The staffers in question were mostly making six figures before the pay raise.  Great work if you can get it.
  2. “Meanwhile, the Senate stalemate made Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone scramble to make payroll for city workers, and drove New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to reveal a hiring freeze hitting an entire class of police academy cadets.”

Of course, one has to have one’s priorities in order.  Such as avoiding voting on that same-sex marriage bill that helped spark this entire sorry affair; New York Democrats are hardly the first members of their party that have struggled to avoid fulfilling promises that they made in haste or cynicism, but these particular types have really raised the bar on ‘unseemly.’  I understand that they don’t have the courage to admit that they were lying all along on the subject, but they could do a better job of pretending, if only for their own pride’s sake.

But hey: nice flag.

  1. In lieu of our NYS govenments lack of repect for the people of New York State, their lack of morals and ethics and on behalf of all of the frustrated New Yorkers and because these polititians work for us (theoretically)I would like to say (as their employer) YOU ARE ALL FIRED!

We, the people should remember this embarassing event, not forget it, and hire (vote) those who will do the job expected of them (NOT lawyers). But, real people who know what it is like to labor to get to where they are and put the people first in all that they do. Not blundering, arrogant career polititians in the “good ole boy (and girl) network out to better themselves before their constituents, if they even think about their constituents at all, except at election time of course.
We, the people should be fed up and outraged with the way this state is being handled fiscally without regard to the struggles of the people who are the backbone of this state and who are leaving this fair state because of it.

    Thank you,
