(Via Brother Pejman of RedState) As it stands, there’s a problem with this report, and it’s not what you think:
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon says the Guantanamo Bay prison meets the standard for humane treatment laid out in the Geneva Conventions, according to a report for President Barack Obama, who has ordered the terrorist detention center closed within a year.
The report recommended some changes, including an increase in group recreation for some of the camp’s more dangerous or less compliant prisoners, according to a government official familiar with the study. The report also suggested allowing those prisoners to gather in groups of three or more, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the report has not officially been released.
Hot Air thinks that this is a problem for an administration trying to keep its promise to the Democratic base in light of a plurality of the population not wanting Gitmo closed, but there’s actually an easy solution to that: Obama can simply break his promise to the Democratic base. It won’t be the first time – it won’t even be the tenth time – and they’ll probably forgive him for it. Even if they don’t, who cares? What are they going to do, vote Republican?
What the problem here is that if the Obama administration is being counseled to allow for more social interaction among the worst of its involuntary detainees then they’re probably going to have to do it; which means that if said detainees use the opportunity to organize some violence then the Obama administration is going to look bad, in a way that reinforces stereotypes about Democrats. I would feel worse about this, if it weren’t for the fact that Obama’s earned any bad karma that comes his way…
