OK, when the National Journal isn’t buying this ‘free community college’ thing…

…then you can expect it to die on the vine.

President Obama wants to provide free tuition at community colleges, a proposal that could benefit as many as 9 million students, according to a White House outline of the plan released Thursday.

There is one big caveat in the proposal — there is no plan to fund it, other than to ask Congress for the money.

Let me provide a spoiler warning for this one: Congress isn’t going to give the administration billions of dollars with which to jack up the price of a community college education – oh, no, it’s not actually going to be ‘free,’ in this scenario.  And if we woke up tomorrow to discover that our Congress had been swapped with Mirror-Earth’s?  …Yeah, the Democrats from that dimension wouldn’t fund this program, either. Notice how nothing like this happened with the ‘stimulus,’ of infamous memory? Yeah, that should tell you everything that you need to know about how serious this proposal is.

Ach, well, this is really about trying to keep the youth vote entertained, in the face of having to vote for one of three old white Democrats in 2016.

PS: Mind you, I wouldn’t mind so much if the government made it easier for some of these kids to go to welding school. Or become plumbers. Or electricians. Real jobs, in other words – because we have more possible positions than we do applicants.

  1. Republicans should take up the bill and add a clause repealing Obamacare in its entirety, use the money to pay for the College part.
“You can have free health care or free Community college. What is it going to be? Choose Democrats!”

Probably a waste of precious legislative time to troll Democrats but still.

And that’s exactly the point! When this dies on the vine, Our President can say “I wanted to give you Free Stuff, but those nasty ol’ Rethuglikkkans obstructed me!” And his minions in the media will agree, and the low-information voters will have yet another reason th hate conservatives and libertarians.

I’ve always found it amazing that the Progressive mindset, supposedly all in favor of the working class, has such an aristocratic disdain regarding the “trades.” We should all get MAs in gender studies. That will fix the economy.

However, to give the idea its due, teaching trades is really what Community Colleges do in a lot of places. You want to learn to be a machinist, plumber, transcriptionist, etc? You pretty much do that at Community College in my part of the country.
