On the other hand, I find this new Supergirl promo… problematical.

You know what it is?

It’s pretty simple, really. You don’t need to tell me who Supergirl is, because you don’t need to tell me who Superman is, and you don’t need to start off every Superman-based show with Krypton blowing up.  We know that Krypton blew up. We know that Superman has flight and X-ray vision and super-strength and invulnerability and all the rest of it, so… there’s no need to tell us another origin story in Kara. I’m down with the idea of showing her learn how to be a more effective superhero; but you don’t need to sell me on why she should even be a superhero in the first place. We can take that as given.

PS: While we’re on the subject… hey, did you know that Bruce Wayne’s parents were brutally murdered in front of him, causing him to swear vengeance on evil-doers everywhere and fight crime as the Batman? You did? Great! …SO DOES EVERYBODY ELSE IN WESTERN CIVILIZATION.  So can we then just skip ahead to the part where he’s doing awesome Bat-karate to people?

PPS: The Ed Norton The Incredible Hulk movie (which I liked) solved this entire problem by fast-forwarding through Banner’s origin story, sans dialog, in the opening credits.  I thought that this was perfect.

  1. But you’re missing all of that opportunity for angst!
And isn’t that what people love about superheroes? I heard this in a song about Superman, after all. It seemed to be very popular.

Which segues into your previous thread very nicely. It was Hiro and his unbridled enthusiasm that made that story.

  2. I watched the promo when it first came out and liked it. Then, the pilot leaked and I watched that. There is NOTHING in the pilot of interest that isn’t in the promo. The pilot felt like an extended version of the promo. Too much happens in the 46 minutes. They rushed everything, without indulging is spoilers – they should have made this into two episodes. I would go one; but, spoilers. despite the problems I have high hopes for the series. The episode can be found on torrent sites.

  3. Respectfully disagree.

For the major superheroes, you have a point. Superman’s planet blew up, and he was raised in the American Midwest. Batman watched his parents die pointlessly, and resolved to fight crime. Spider-Man was just an ordinary kid bitten by a freaky spider. (Radioactive, genetically modified, whatever.) People who know nothing about superheroes know that, for the same reasons everyone knows at least basically who Babe Ruth was. It’s just something you pick up from the zeitgeist.

But Supergirl? No, she should have an origin story, especially now. Not because most people wouldn’t be able to reason out where she comes from or what she can do (let’s see, wears Superman-like costume, calls self Supergirl…gosh, could there be some similarities?). No, because origin stories establish a baseline tone. And as DC darkens their tone into a lost audience, and even Marvel flirts with shades of gray on both small screen and big, this just looks fun. It’ll be nice to have some sunshine in the superhero world again. Personally, I can’t wait.

    1. I think he just meant that you don’t have to show, or dwell, on the destruction of Krypton.

also, watch the pilot. Midway through, they shift into a dark tone that I think they intend to use through the series. I had hopes of lightness like “Lois & Clark” but I think they want Smallville.

      1. If that’s what Moe meant, then I agree.
        .
And that’s depressing news about the tone.
