Overreach and the Culture Wars (sorry, but there’s a limited number of titles I can reasonably use).

There are two groups of people who don’t want to hear this:

History teaches us two clear lessons about the ebb and flow of the Culture War: first, that whichever side believes it is winning will tend to overreach, pushing too far, too fast, and in the process alienating the public. The second is that the American people tend to oppose whoever they see as the aggressor in the Culture Wars—whoever they see as trying to intrusively impose their values on other people and bullying everyone who disagrees.

First, there’s most of the Activist Left, who are gearing up for a good round of bayonet-the-wounded and thus aren’t inclined to hear that they may not be the vanguard of history after all. And second? …Well, there is a much-smaller – but tangible – part of the Right that is sorta-maybe half-looking forward toward a dystopian future where they’re fighting a losing battle against the aforementioned vanguard of history. Things would at least be less complicated, then. Expecting to always lose never means that you have to work out what happens when you win.

PS: It was not my intent to make anybody uncomfortable, exasperated, or personally upset by that observation.  But neither is it my fault; also, I’m not here to tell people what they want to hear. I’m here to tell people what I think that they need to hear, which is not exactly the same thing.

PPS: And, to forestall the inevitable: yes, at least one of the authors of that quote up there signed that damnably stupid amicus brief on SSM. I, however, did not sign that brief; and I agree with the sentiments in the quote. See previous footnote.

  1. .. grammatical error, in PS, 2nd sentence .. “here”, not “hear”.

Having read the link earlier today, it’s making the rounds .. I agree that the right had best figure out how to run things again.
    .
If the nouveau-Jacobins overreach, as they seem hell-bent on doing, the Right will be in charge Real Soon Now.

    1. We hope.

Of course, the thought of McConnell and Boehner running things doesn’t exactly fill me with happy thoughts, either.

Somehow, I don’t see either of those [redacted]-stains surviving …

They have told too many of the about-to-be-ascendant grass-roots types that it’s raining when [redacted]

        1. Yeah, I wish i could believe that. {redacted} stains need something stronger than the bleach we have available…..

        2. I for one look forward to the day when they try it again only to find their wangs have been tied in knots… with full bladders behind ’em. *evil snickering*

  2. Some of us believe that the Article V Convention of States is the best solution.

Isn’t that a constructive middle ground between waiting for a Soviet or Yugoslav style collapse and standing by while the left bayonets the wounded?

    1. They’re flagrantly violating the Constitution NOW.
How would passing an “and we really mean it” amendment change this?
Is the 10th Amendment less than clear?
