Pornhub interested in buying Tumblr, for precisely the reasons that you’d think.

Can’t wait to see what ads THAT title throws up below, hey?

Less than two years after buying Tumblr as part of itsĀ Yahoo acquisition, Verizon is reportedly trying to sell the blogging platform. Pornhub has also announced that it wants to buy Tumblr and end the site’s Verizon-imposed porn ban.

“Verizon Communications Inc. is seeking a buyer for blogging website Tumblr, according to people familiar with the matter, as it tries to steady a media business that has struggled to meet revenue targets,” The Wall Street JournalĀ reported yesterday.

Via Instapundit. It sounds like the dude who owns Pornhub is interested in buying Tumblr for — OK, I’m not sure what adjective to use, here. ‘Ideological?’ ‘Philosophical?’ ‘Principled,’ if I could even type that out without having my readership erupt in horrified laughter? — reasons. Which is admittedly about the only way that Tumblr can survive, because it ain’t going to do that by making money via selling ad space. That does seem to be the new/old paradigm for supporting art* these days: find somebody rich who likes being the sort of person who spreads largess around. Which does admittedly suck a little; but your art not getting supported at all sucks even more.

:pause:

OK, yeah, there’s a bit of a double entendre there. Well, I might as well leave it in.

:another pause:

DAMMIT!

*I speak generally of Tumblr here, mostly because it’s too nice a morning out to spend it arguing over whether pr0n can ever be art.

  1. I got ads for Amazon silk web browser, a media distribution textbook, the wall street journal, a youtube app, something called tview, and something called iweb TV player.

    Guess it’s safe enough.

I don’t use Tumbler, so I suppose it really doesn’t apply to me. Generally speaking, if you want to sell something, just add nude women. E.L. James took some Twilight fanfiction, changed the names, added some bondage, and then sold a gazillion books.

  2. The internet is for ____.

Eh, most of the stuff I do online could fairly be called mental masturbation (albeit not sexual in any direct fashion) . I’d be better off if I shunted the time and effort into something real and productive, so I’m not going to throw stones.
That said, I do have daughters, and I’d like them to have to put in significantly more effort to display that level of bad judgment.

  3. In my experience, reddit has been doing a lot better attendance-wise since Tumblr decided to became puritanical (and Tumblr thence lost all appeal to this single individual).
Pornhub co-opting Tumblr would be karmic payback.

  4. Oddly enough, Pornhub has apparently become the go-to place for some video bloggers who have had trouble with SJW persecution on other sites. Supposedly some gun bloggers have started putting stuff up on the site that is completely safe for work and kids after being driven off of other platforms.

Given that, acquiring Tumblr might let Pornhub provide additional options for such individuals. It’d be rather ironic if a porn site ends up becoming the best friend of online conservatives. But the Obama administration did pressure the banks to limit access to people in porn (among other businesses). So there might be a legitimate common enemy.

  5. I would gue$$ that PH is intere$ted in buying Tumblr for the u$usal rea$on$.

  6. Anyone that had spent any time on Tumblr could have told Verizon that axing the pr0n would kneecap Tumblr. It would be amusing as hell if Pornhub bought Tumblr, letting the SJWs return– but then conservatives carve out their own Tumblr space, too.
