What was the guy thinking? In researching my new book Welcome to Obamaland, I discovered that Obama’s judgment is pretty dreadful – but this? My favourite theory so far – suggested by presenter Greg Garrison – was that it was a move calculated to please his Lady Macbeth. At the moment in Britain, we’re still in the “Doesn’t she look fabulous in a designer frock” stage of understanding of Michelle Obama. Gradually, though, we’ll begin to realise that she is every bit the terrifying executive’s wife that Hillary Clinton was. Or, shudder, Cherie Blair.
We may just LURVE Michelle’s fashion sense. But Michelle doesn’t reciprocate our affection, one bit. Her broad-brush view of history associates Brits with the wicked white global hegemony responsible for the slave trade. Never mind that a white, Tory Englishman – William Wilberforce – brought the slave trade to an end. Judging by her record, Michelle does not make room for such subtle nuance.
Tell the truth, I don’t know if I buy that. Oh, I can believe that the First Lady might have a grudge against the British government; name a lefty academic type that hasn’t developed one in the last eight years (resentment at feeling secret shame is hardly an unknown psychological condition). But I’m not sure that it was the primary motivation here. Although it’d be a comfort, in its way: it would suggest that the snubbing of Great Britain by the current government was motivated by an emotional reaction. That’s somehow better than the alternative; which is that Obama just didn’t care.

I find that explanation a lot more believable. What bothered me about the article was that I could not find where he gave any evidence to support his claim, other than “the First Lady is not a nice person, so there”. The piece seems like an immature lashing out over hurt feelings. They were treated rudely, no doubt. However, I don’t see any sign that the First Lady was involved.
Moe, just wait until the British Press start putting together the Wens Party and the treatment of its guest to the treatment of the British Leader, I’ll bet that when or if BO goes the Britain, the British Crown will be put under preasure to return the favor. Then again as you point out BO has not been that transparent, he’s just ignoreing them, with the international press. IMHO BO is trying to grow nationlism around the world, united we stand divided we fall and all, so that countries are force to pick sides and if they pick BOs side, BO is the godfather. As has been pionted out everywhere, its all about control and ego, well thats what government is about isn’t.
Yesterday I read Welcome to Obamaland, and, if I didn’t know any better, I would have thought you were reading my mind…anyhow, the book is best described in two words: Fookin’ Brilliant !
