Mostly because I mentioned it earlier… today I remove John Adams, and replace it with The Black Book of Communism: Crimes, Terror, Repression.
You know. Just in case you weren’t feeling depressed, or anything.

A grim read, but an insightful one.
When a government is doing everything it can to make sure that everybody takes care of everybody, eventually it will find that there are people who aren’t quite pulling their weight. When “equality” is in and of itself a goal, it means that you have no real carrots to offer.
When all you have are sticks, it breeds resentment… which means that you have more people who aren’t pulling their weight.
And so you have to double down. And double down again. And double down again. Eventually you have gulags. When even the gulags stop working, you have to have mass graves.
And, even then, you will have people who aren’t pulling their weight.
