Update on Bioware’s Mass Effect 3 revised ending DLC.

I originally had a snarkier title, but I don’t want to become one of those guys. So… new DLC ending. Hope it shuts down the controversy…

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–BioWare, a Label of Electronic Arts Inc. announced Mass Effect™ 3: Extended Cut, a downloadable content pack that will expand upon the events at the end of the critically acclaimed Action RPG. Through additional cinematic sequences and epilogue scenes, the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut will give fans seeking further clarity to the ending of Mass Effect 3 deeper insights into how their personal journey concludes. Coming this summer, the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut will be available for download on the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC for no extra charge*.

“We are all incredibly proud of Mass Effect 3 and the work done by Casey Hudson and team,” said Dr. Ray Muzyka, Co-Founder of BioWare and General Manager of EA’s BioWare Label. “Since launch, we have had time to listen to the feedback from our most passionate fans and we are responding. With the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut we think we have struck a good balance in delivering the answers players are looking for while maintaining the team’s artistic vision for the end of this story arc in the Mass Effect universe.”

I will note, though, that if the free alternate ending doesnt satify you – I would have charged ten bucks – then there’s not much else Bioware can do to make you feel better, and that people are already interfering with this deal that I have with Bioware where I give them money and they give me new toys, costumes, and/or playhouses for my dolls.

  1. on a happier note, have you been following the awesomeness on Kickstarter that is giving us a new Tim Schaefer adventure game, Wasteland 2, and a proper Shadowrun RPG game??

  2. A game company doing anything for free means they messed up big time and they know it. They don’t do anything for free.

But as this wont change why the reapers are attacking the first place…meh.

  3. Eh, the only thing that would have made folks happy was for them not to have done this in the first place. Although reading between the lines, it’s not really an alternate ending. It’s just an attempt to make it have less of a WTF factor.

My opinion is they should have just left it alone, admitted they screwed up, and moved on. Because you really only get one shot at something like this. Retconning in a different ending won’t make anyone happy, and trying to add explanatory exposition would be something stupid, like adding midichlorians to explain why some people can use the Force in the Star Wars universe – details that ultimately hurt, not help.
