On the advice* of my wife I took the blessed thing to a local computer guy, who promptly determined that the power supply was busted and needed a new one. Thanks to the coupon that my wife also found and printed out for me, it’ll even cost less than a hundred bucks and I’ll get it back this afternoon. If all goes well, I’m back on track for the Kindle purchase.
Moral of the story? Marry well.

*No, not instruction. My wife never tells me what to do. I’m just not stupid.
Good news indeed!
Yeah, if the bad PSU didn’t fry anything else then that’s great.
Looks that way. And yeah, I’m picking up an external hard drive and doing weekly backups from now on.
That price includes labor, right? Because for nearly a hundred bucks with a coupon, you’re talking pretty expensive for a PSU unless it’s a 1000+W model, which is a waste unless you’ve got multiple high-end video cards.
Yup, includes labor. They had the whole thing done in about three hours, too. So I’m happy with the end result.
Let me clarify… it took them a half hour: it took me 2.5 hours to get back to the shop.
I was going to say that 3 hours is a long time to swap a PSU… 🙂
Glad it’s working again.
May you be more diligent about backing up than I’ve ever managed.
If you haven’t done so yet, I would suggest investing in a decent external back up for the most important files.
excellent news 🙂
