Barack Obama takes baby steps on the ambassadorship front.

At least the major Democratic donor (Jane Hartley) that Barack Obama is nominating for the ambassadorship to France is reported to actually speak French. I know, I know: it’s a low bar to jump.  Then again, Barack Obama has been having trouble clearing bars that are actually recessed into the floor, so every little bit helps.

PS: Regarding the NYT link above: it references the Irish-American community.  Speaking as a member of the Irish-American community, I would like to note that there is no actual Irish-American community, for two reasons:

  1. We already have a community.  It’s called ‘American society.’
  2. More to the point, Irish-Americans tend not to hang out with each other, largely because we all know each other too well.

Sorry if this bursts any bubbles for anybody.

  1. I meet fellow members of the ‘community’ everyday. Its called the Town.
I’m certain a significant number of Americans have some sort of Irish background. I do. I have Scotch-Irish (Protestant) and Irish Catholic both. No community though. Why is that? Well I guess its because we’ve done what immigrants are supposed to do and assimilated. Wish Democrats would understand that this is in fact a beautiful process that adds to both the Nation and the specific immigrant groups both.

  2. Point of fact, the Irish have never gotten along with each other terribly well.
