I got emailed this by a reader, and my response is: don’t try this trick at home.

…because, eventually, somebody will shoot your dog.

The same reader informs me this was done in Poland: which, indeed, has an extremely low private ownership of firearms ratio (and, it would seem, a carefully-cultivated sadistic streak). On the bright side… damn, but the Poles pretty much shucked off communism like a pest-ridden, wormy, diseased and decaying outer shell, huh?  Amazing how quickly things get spruced up when the concept of ‘private property’ is no longer officially considered to be obscene.
