Dan McLaughlin, as is his wont, handily summarizes recent Eastern European / Eurasian history in less than 140 characters.
@BecketAdams of course, the Russians don't get invited many places because they tend not to leave.

But I’m not bitter. Nope. Not in the least.
lolwut? America has 662 bases in 38 countries around the world.
And the locals invariably freak out a little when we leave. Something about how we staff them with walking cash dispensers that spray currency wherever they go.
I grew up on Army bases throughout Europe in the 80s. The solders called the surrounding country outside the base “the economy.” As in, “I’m going out into the economy to get a beer.”
.
There’s a REASON population centers spring up around military bases, is what I’m saying.
we didn’t send anyone because the sympathies of Barack and Eric are pretty much on the other side.
as far as leaving… *someone* will fill the resulting power vacuum. russians, chinese, ISIl, local thugs, or keep the americans…. pick one.
I’m glad I wasn’t sipping hot coffee at the same moment I read that brutal, yet funny, truth.
