Right guy (one of them, anyway), wrong song.
I’ve heard some sort of story along those lines. Wikipedia claims Sweet Home Alabama was written in response to 2 other songs:

No Moe, “Sweet Home Alabama” was written in response to Neil Young’s “Southern Man”, Not CSN’s “Southern Cross”.
OK, that makes sense. I’d love to know how the DJ got that one wrong; did he not listen to both songs?
Southern Cross came out in 82, Sweet Home Alabama came out in 74. So barring some time travel shenanigans, this isn’t possible.
Pretty sure they don’t need CSN around anyhow, too.
Southern Man makes sense: the Southern Cross is a constellation in the southern hemisphere and the locale references are all in the South Pacific.
