Quick first impression: the song itself is nothing special. The lead vocalist sounds like a real talent though. Kinda reminds me of Carole King.
Nice intelligent pop : lyrics worth paying attention to . The mix is interesting , overdubbed drums give a roadhouse/ dive feel to a studio recording . The singer does indeed have pipes , but I’m thinking more a Bonnie Rait tenor without the rasp of 30 years of Wild Turkey . Got a long long road trip coming up so I bought the album . And any you kittens and cats out there have any similar fresh and new recommendations of stuff in a similar vein ??
They tend to over-produce their studio work. Engineers have egos too, I guess. This is much better live; without additional studio tracks, the four of them still have a really big sound. Compare their performance of the same song on CONAN: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZmv5eauQFQ
ZOMFG, THEY PLAYED HERE IN TULSA LAST NIGHT AND I MISSED IT!?
Excuse me. I need to lie down for a moment.
How do you guys find this stuff? I apparently don’t know how to find music anymore.
That said, Lake Street Dive sounds like a band worth risking a few bucks on.
Rolling Stone touted them as one of the best new bands of 2012… or 2013 or something.
Sadly, RS is often off the mark but not with these folks. I think they also recommended Sturgill Simpson that same issue, and he’s pretty good: something of a 21st Century Waylon Jennings https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWx6csgGkg4
Word of mouth, or at least Twitter. Some of the people that I read will tweet music they like. Sometimes I buy it, too. For example: have you gotten any Sean Rowe?
