The problematical ‘Suicide Squad’ Comic-Con trailer.

Sonny highlights the ambiguity on this one pretty well:

You really can’t tell just how messed up this film is going to be, and whether or not it’s going to be the kind of messed up that we’d all be able to groove to. I never read the original comics, so I don’t have any kind of expectations thereof; I assume that somebody here has, so feel free to sing out. What’s the current reaction from fans? Anticipation? Dread? Dreadful anticipation? Anticipatory dread?

  1. Firstly, that’s not a terribly enticing trailer. Not enough action and far too much time spent gazing at characters that the average viewer won’t know. Explain the situation better. Blow something up. Get people interested. This trailer doesn’t really do any of that. Plus Amanda Waller is far too thin.

Otherwise, I’m a long, long time reader of Suicide Squad, having started with it back when DC introduced the current version in Legends. If you want an idea of a good Suicide Squad movie, go find the DC animated film “Batman: Assault on Arkham” or the Justice League Unlimited Episode “Task Force X.”

For a longer thought- part of the appeal of the book is that it has a completely different dynamic than other hero books do. With the JLA, you know that Atom isn’t going to suddenly turn on the rest of the team and start fighting against them. But in Suicide Squad, that’s never off the table. Additionally, the nature of the team (A to D-level villains and the occasional hero) meant that few members of the cast were safe. Captain Boomerang probably was, since the writers loved using him, but if say, Punch and Judy or Rainbow Raider showed up, you never knew if it was just a random choice or if someone in editorial decided that the character was no longer needed. I mean, the book killed Grant Morrison at one point. If the movie holds true to the comics then half the folks in the trailer shouldn’t be walking out of the movie.

Basically, I’m cautiously optimistic. (Although not because of that trailer.) At its best, it’ll be The Dirty Dozen crossed with Mission Impossible, but with super powers. At worst, well, it’s unlikely that it’ll be worse than Green Lantern or the Hasselhoff Nick Fury.

  2. The Joker showing up gives me a bad feeling about it.
Harley was way too serious. Madcap works well for her. Little girl lost? Not so much. She lept into the void willingly.
The New 52 version of Waller is pretty spot on, though. (Different haircut, but oozes the attitude.)

Could be good, could be bad. We’ll have to see.
