(Via Hot Air Headlines) I admit: I’ve been wondering for quite some time just how dangerous the Chernobyl site still is. I mean, I’m aware that the epicenter is not somewhere that you want to linger. But the local ecosystem seems to be functioning more or less as expected:
The site of the world’s worst nuclear accident is now a wildlife haven. The abundance of large animals around Chernobyl, such as deer, elk and wild boar, matches that of nature reserves in the region – and wolves are seven times as common.
Of course. The true apex predator – humanity – is currently staying far, far away from the place. Gives the wolves a leg up, as it were.

PS: I have wondered for some time just what would have been the effects of a nuclear war in the 1970s or 1980s. It’s traditional to assume that civilization would have ended above the township level, but what would have actually happened? Fortunately, we never had to find out.
as long as the “abundance of large animals” doesn’t include bears the size of Winnebago trailers….
Or landsharks… I expect the occasional giant tarantula or scorpion, but landsharks…. I draw the line.
What can I say? I’m a product of 1950’s Sci-Fi movies…
But what if they’re friendly bears that can go with you on fetch quests?
Well if you’re around in the next 10 – 20 years , you will probably find out what the world looks like after a nuclear exchange . Hopefully the relevant environment will only be what was once known as the Middle East or as O calls it the Levant . Or perhaps deer and large animals will be roaming the streets of Berlin , London and NYC .
River Monsters on Animal Planet did an episode where they fished there, and Top Gear had a race across the quarantined area. It was kind of interesting to see how quickly a city returns to wilderness when it’s not occupied.
It’s traditional to assume that civilization would have ended above the township level, but what would have actually happened?
.
It is not clear that this was all lies, but the Soviets were effective at promoting lies, and would have had reason to so. Like how in Xianxia minor antagonists talk about how strong their backing is when trying to casually bully the protagonist to death.
.
Nuclear war is probably over-hyped. I would not say that a nuclear war would have no consequences.
.
We are probably going to find out.
