Tweet of the Day, The House Freedom Caucus Deals With The Fallout edition.

I post this Tweet knowing that at least half my readers are going to be upset about this…

…but it’s a done deal, folks. I mean, I like Daniel Webster. The man will always have a special place in my wizened political heart for the way that he backhanded Alan Grayson out of Grayson’s seat in 2010*. But he won’t have the votes to be Speaker. If people would like my advice, it’d be that the HFC should get Webster or one of their other people into, say, the House Majority Leader slot.  That would be useful for everybody… except Kevin McCarthy, I guess.

Moe Lane

*He backhanded Alan Grayson so hard, in fact, that Grayson went looking for another seat to buy. Which makes me chuckle, every time I see Grayson try to brag about how tough he is. Not tough enough for a rematch with Webster, apparently.

  1. Oh, I’m not upset, yet. Now, if Ryan behaves exactly like Boehner did, and yet they fall in line behind him because he’s Paul Ryan, then there’s a problem. And honestly I expect the former to happen. I’m just not sure about the latter, whether they really do want another President Clinton so badly.

    1. I don’t really care who sits in the speakers chair, either. It all depends on how business is conducted. I’d love to be wrong in my expectations, but recent history does not bode well….

      1. As far as I can tell, the top two most likely results of the recent unpleasantness will include:
        .
        1) Paul Ryan remains speaker until he retires, TBD.
        .
        2) Some of the alleged Tea Partiers get primaried, TBD.
        .
Can’t say I much care about either, other than this does tend to keep Ryan in the House.

  2. Tom Price is my pick for House Majority Leader, personally. Before the shuffle post-2010 census, he was my Representative.

    1. Did you move, or did redistricting change your rep? I’m down in GA. 2 (%$#&# %$%@$&%^$ Sanford Bishop will own this seat until he drops dead, I reckon…)

  3. Speaking as someone who is largely in sympathy with the so-called “establishment,” I agree with Moe’s suggestion. There should be a Freedom Caucus member as one of the major chamber leaders (the Republicans should have five of the nine slots), and there should also be a Freedom Caucus member as one of the conference leaders. Perhaps Majority Whip and conference vice-chair. The HFC is a minority in the majority, but it is an influential and important minority, and it deserves proportional representation at the party and chamber leadership tables.
