  1. We live in a fallen world. Everything is bad to some extent.

    I agree that protectionism is more bad than good, nearly all of the time. (Although I would argue that being self-sufficient with respect to food and energy are high national priorities that are likely to meet that threshold.)

    But import tariffs themselves do have a valid role in funding the inspection of imports, a minor brake on outsourcing production, and as a punitive weapon to ensure that countries enjoying our policy of free trade do not engage in protectionism against us. (As most of them do.)

    1. Generally I’d agree, but would add competing with certain areas effectively engaging in slave labor is also…counter-productive.
