The Rebellion of 1798. The missing verse from most versions of the song:
And they fought for poor old Ireland,
And full bitter was their fate,
Oh what glorious pride and sorrow,
Fills the name of ninety-eight!
Yet, thank God, e’en still are beating
Hearts in manhood burning noon,
Who would follow in their footsteps,
At the rising of the moon
I’ve always enjoyed the songs of rebellion. I prefer the Clancy Brother’s version to this one. Happy songs about war and sad songs about love.
Also, don’t charge entrenched artillery.
The mighty Gaels of Ireland are the men that God made mad, all their wars are happy, and all their songs are sad.
That aside, found a new Irish Folk group called The High Kings that have a real nice version.
