The looming War of the Little Live-Action Mermaids.

Seriously. Disney has been looking at the recent and projected numbers for their recent and upcoming live-action stuff, and once they were done salviating they immediately started looking at suitable titles. And there is nothing more suitable, in this context, than The Little Mermaid. It is virtually impossible to contemplate that movie absent the shimmer of nostalgia that… sorry, no, it’s not a shimmer of nostalgia. That movie generates its own nostalgia field at this point. Anyway, Disney wants some of that.

Small problem: so does British film company Working Title, and they’re already at work on the film.  And making Ariel a blonde, which should prove… interesting.  Remember that nostalgia field thing? More people probably think that the Disney version of the story is the definitive one at this point; it’s certainly way different than Han Christian Andersen’s. …Which may be for the best, honestly.

All in all: we may see a bit of a movie tussle, next year.  Should be entertaining!

  1. Or this is a return to the years when we had to have two movies of everything: Wyatt Earp/Tombstone, Dante’s Peak/Volcano, Armageddon/Deep Impact, etc.

  2. I hated what Disney did to the story.
Time has eased that, but I wouldn’t exactly Val it nostalgia.
