I ran across this review while looking up that new guy that Bioware may have hired to do the next Dragon Age, and I was wondering whether Sunless Sea was worth it. It looks like a top-down game, not a first-person, but that’s not a deal-killer for me. Anybody out there play it?

Yeah I had fun playing it but then got distracted by fallout 4. Set in a very lovecraftian mythos world, and you could die, a lot.
All part of the game though.
You haven’t played Fallen London/Echo Bazaar? Huh.
Sunless Sea is a good port of the atmosphere and worldbuilding of Fallen London into a top down, merchantship roguelike kind of thing. They had a free weekend on Steam a few months back, played it, decided I still liked the setting but didn’t like the mechanics of that kind of game.
I probably played Echo Bazaar for a couple of years. Good stuff, followed the Free To Play model of Spend Cash If You Like. No clue what they’re doing now, although apparently the game was recently ported to mobile.
Oh, and Sunless Sea is probably more directly Lovecraftian than Fallen London.
Indeed. Beautiful setting, and I even understand the free-to-play model. But, I’d preffer a game that didn’t severely limit my play-ability to 20 min-increments unless I pay like $5-$10 a DAY for extra time. Especially for the grind-y bits.
Yeah, that doesn’t work well for lots of people. Sunless Sea isn’t FTP, and doesn’t have any hidden costs that I know of, though.
*looks at promo trailers* OOohhh. Shiny. I may have to give this one a shot.
In case it matters, there’s an expansion pack coming out Oct 11.
