If for no other reason than there’s going to be some confusion over which Captain Marvel is getting a movie (in this case, the Marvel comics superheroine). The character is not as well known as, say, Spider-man or Batman; so introducing her makes a certain amount of sense. …Unless they drag Captain Marvel into a MCU film before then, but there’s already a lot of superheroes cycling through those already.

So…not Billy Batson, then?
.
(Yes, I am out of touch.)
It’s messy, and involves past trademark infringement lawsuits between DC and Marvel. But no, different character.
Which is why I agree, an origin story of some sort, somewhere, is necessary.
Billy Batson is DC’s Captain Marvel.
They’ve fairly recently dropped the name almost entirely, and just called him Shazam!
(I think they fear the mouse’s deep pockets and legal staff.)
I am amused that I got two responeses by making a joke.
i thot Captain Marvel was a blond guy with wristbands…?
The way the legal battles have gone on this IP, at some point he very well might have.
Full name was Mar-Vell, but yeah; the confusion would have been bad.
