Today is the 50th anniversary of the first Doctor Who regeneration.

Fascinating article, this: it’s interesting that something that was simply intended to be a novel way to explain a new actor in a lead role would end up permitting the television franchise to survive for a half century. Mind you, I started watching when it was Tom Baker, and I stopped watching when it was no longer Tom Baker. I understand that it was good before, and that it was good after. It’s just that Tom Baker was the Doctor Who that I wanted to watch.  I’ll watch the rest of them in Heaven, or something.

  1. Tom Baker is my my Doctor too. I’ve seen a smattering of episodes of other Doctors, but non of them ever interested me. (until the new series which I have watched every bit of.)

  2. On one paw, Tom Baker was a very good doctor .. on the other paw, he stayed in the role a bit too long…
    .
On the third paw, *because* Tom Baker was a tough doctor to follow, they went with Davidson, who seemed almost deliberately calibrated to annoy the Baker fans ..
    .
Then, the producers seemed to *admit* the error and brought in Colin Baker .. only he acted such a spoiled prat that he was completely unlikable much of the time..
    .
So .. in keeping with the Machete Order .. this cat’s advice is, after an extended Tom Baker binge, jump forward to Sylvester McCoy .. when the franchise got back on track .. *then* go back and watch Peter Davidson and Colin Baker.
