Well, this promises to be entertainingly messed up.
As Coming Soon puts it, “The Discovery stars Robert Redford, Rooney Mara, Jason Segel, Riley Keough and Jesse Plemons and is a love story set in a world where the afterlife has been scientifically proven, and as a result millions of people start taking their own lives to “get there.”” Which is interesting, because Larry Niven once wrote a short story about an alien race that discovered the secrets of the afterlife, and then promptly committed suicide en masse. I don’t think that this movie is based on that story, though. If for no other reason than I don’t think Hollywood has the collective mother-wit to mine Niven for ideas.
Also: I think that the situation would level out for humanity before things got that far. I mean, I personally believe in an afterlife myself, but I’m in no rush to get there: I don’t see how getting confirmation is going to sway me to do something stupid like discorporate myself all over the living room walls. It’ll be interesting to see just how intensely misanthropic the director and/or the writers were…
I wonder how they’ll handle the fact that many systems of Afterlife have… um, “voluntary arrival” clauses that explicitly affect conditions in said Afterlife.
I was wondering that myself.
That looked like Robert Redford. I think I’ll pass.
