The latest ‘Power Rangers’ movie trailer.

Well. The Power Rangers movie may not suck, but my kids aren’t going to go see it. I guess that there are enough adults by now who grew up watching the show that it won’t matter that it’s not geared towards the under-ten crowd.

I’m not really disapproving. I didn’t watch the Power Rangers myself when it was on – I was a decade too old, more or less – so I don’t really know if this is even annoying to the folks in their twenties and thirties. For all I know, they’re going to be on a full nostalgia kick over it.

  1. Hmm. Maybe. Is it just me or does every Giant Robot this decade look like a Michael Bay castoff?

  2. *breathes in deeply* My body is ready.

I was born in 1980, I was right there when the show first came out. As a fan of the original show, this looks amazing and this doesn’t look insulting. I’m there.

    1. Yeah, I’ll pass.

I’ve always found the original to be beyond camp and well into lame .. seemed like they should just save money and film on the “Saved by the Bell” sets.. with the same cast ..

The movie looks like it’s trying to find the balance between nostalga and camp and .. veering heavily into “lame” again.

I’m happy you’re looking forward to it. Enjoy!

  3. Cartoon Nostalgia has a very short shelf life as doesn’t translate to ticket sales – see Speed Racer, Josie and the pussycats, jem and the hooligtams. The only successful ones iirc are transformers and gi joe, booth of which were solid toy sensations first.

    1. There were the Scooby-Doo live action movies. Which did well enough to get a sequel.

As films, I’d say Speed Racer wasn’t bad, but it’s visual style was a thing. Josie and the Pussycats was mildly terrible, and it had the sort of in-joke, sort of no IN YOUR FACE PRODUCT PLACEMENT EVERYWHERE once the band got famous. Didn’t see Jem, but critics and fans were harsh.

And we’re getting the live-action Archie thing. It’ll be interesting to see how that goes.

Basically, I think Cartoon Nostalgia is a thing, but isn’t enough to save a poor film on its own.

      1. Pretty much. Cartoon Nostalga ensures completists and fanbois will see it in the theater and buy the DVD .. but if the movie stinks on ice, that’s *all* the sales it’s getting.

  4. I was never a PR fan–a few years too old, maybe–but the “I’m black” and “Pee in that cup” exchanges made me laugh out loud.

  5. this looks good to me. I will go see this. I was just young enough to watch a bunch of season 1 and the first movie and this looks like I want a “Serious” Power Rangers movie to look.
