Why? Because, frankly, Zootopia should have been up for Best Picture, period. But that’s an old complaint, so let’s try something different. Let’s just admit, once and for all, that genre movies are going to get the shaft when it comes to the ‘prestigious’ categories and instead do something like Best Science Fiction Picture and Best Actress in a Horror Movie and so on, and so on. They might get more people watching every year that way. Lord knows they could use the boost.

The answer is 42.
Suicide Squad won an Oscar. I don’t know why it’s significant, but it is. It either means the Academy has no credibility, or no other film required makeup. Or something. I haven’t seen the film.
I heard someone note during a livestream yesterday that Hollywood will generally give the makeup awards to the film that has the most people in serious makeup in it. And Squad had a lot of folks in makeup in it.

Also, keep in find that the folks who vote in that category are just the makeup artists in film, so they’re generally looking from a different perspective than Hollywood in general is.
The Academy Awards, as with #NerdProm, are “by the industry insiders, for the industry insiders”.
