I think that it’s probably time to teach myself basic print layout.

Or whatever it’s called.  You know: turning text into a RPG supplement, complete with sidebars and a table of contents and everything*. After all, I have a couple of projects just put up that could profitably be converted into something to flog. Gotta hustle if you want to get anywhere in this business, you know.

Unfortunately, while Scrivener is pretty good for formatting fiction it doesn’t seem to be really suited for laying out RPG supplements. Ach, well, I’m sure I’ll figure something out.

*Oh, and art.  Gotta go get some of that.  And no, I wouldn’t solicit any for free for the ‘exposure.’ If I can’t afford it, I’ll do without.

  1. Don’t suppose your local library has a “free or near-free” adult ed class on Microsloth Word?

Most of what you want to do is in there, part of the 20% of it 80% never use…

    1. The problem with doing it in Word, is that the program has problems with large files. Unless you want to save every chapter as a separate file, you will likely have problems.

      1. Not to mention Word’s image formatting is a bit clunky, unless they’ve improved the latest version.

        1. I’m hardly defending Microsloth Word here.

That said, odds are Moe already has a copy, is already familiar with the basics, and is near a library or other “adult ed” opportunity where he could ask questions about layout.

As for large files .. just how large *are* game supplements these days?

  2. For layout you’d probably be better served with something like Adobe’s InDesign and Illustrator.

      1. *shrugs* I’m sure there are free clones out there somewhere on the Interwebs.

        1. I’m sure there are warez copies too .. but I wouldn’t suggest using them.

I don’t suggest hunting up free clones either – compatibility isn’t guaranteed, help can be hard to find, and if Moe plans to submit documents for publication, Microsloth Word is likely to be an acceptable way to do so, Bob’s Adobe Clone not so much.
