It’s one of the oddities of my roleplaying history that I didn’t actually do much with Dungeons & Dragons until I hit college, mostly because my parents were down on D&D. …Just D&D, though. Rolemaster, Call of Cthulhu, Paranoia, GURPS, Hero System? No problem. But no D&D. So, anyway, I never got to play Ravenloft. So I’m kind of looking forward to perusing Curse of Strahd. Hopefully, it won’t suck…

The D&D system was spectacularly unsuited for horror. (Abstract hit points, ad hoc NPC interactions, no skill mechanic, etc.)
Because of that, most of the Ravenloft setting was wildly uneven. There were lots of great ideas, that didn’t really work with the system they were shoehorned into.
.
But The House of Strahd most definably did not suck in any of its forms. I’m almost completely certain that the new incarnation is every bit as nasty as the great old ones.
The House of Strahd decidedly did not suck. And the opening line to Expedition to Castle Ravenloft is still epic: “The Master of Castle Ravenloft is having guests for dinner. And you are invited.”
