So. That ‘Cloak and Dagger’ trailer.

I was reminded of it by Constant Reader BigGator5, so I went and watched the Cloak and Dagger trailer a couple of times.

The problem is: I’ve never read the comics.  I mean, I grok the basic concept behind the characters, but without reading them I dunno whether this is a faithful adaptation of the original. Has Marvel gotten this one right?  Or at least right enough for TV? It’s going to be on Freeform** in 2018, after all.

*I think that we can all agree that Marvel is at its best when it’s not trying to change the core identity of its comic book characters, yes?

**According to Wikipedia, this network has a fascinating journey through the wilds of cable networks.  Started off as a CBN satellite feed, became the Family Channel, segued into first Fox Family, then ABC Family, and is now Freeform and targeting millennials.  Imagine being the janitor who worked through all those paradigm changes…

  1. I don’t know too much about Cloak and Dagger myself. From what I understand of them: They are Punisher-like vigilantes, preferring to take out gangsters and rarely tangle with super-villains.

As for the show, I don’t know. Seems too YA and angsty for my taste. That’s not to say it won’t be good or successful.

  2. I have no clue what the pair has done in the last 10-15 years. But saying that, yeah, it seems to get the basic idea. The girl is white and, say, upper middle class, the guy is black and not. They’re both teens. The girl creates throwable daggers of light, the guy basically has shadow powers with his cloak of darkness [which didn’t show up much or at all in the trailer]. The guy had a need to feed off of her light for at least part of the time.

The origin may be different [I think originally they were kidnapped and used as experimental subjects for drug tests [ie, crack cocaine]]. There should be a strong “We’re stronger together than apart” vibe. But I didn’t get any “WTF” kind of moments with the trailer.
