Huh. I think that my landline died.

First the cordless was giving out the ‘Line in use’ message and no dial tone, and now the cordless is telling me that there’s no power to the base even though it’s plugged in and taking a charge. Wait, now it’s saying ‘Line in use’ again.  I need to go find a spare phone to plug in…

PS: Yes, by all means: helpful suggestions helpful. I’ve already tried unplugging the base and plugging it back in again.  I’m also looking to see whether the problem is that the phone needs to be charged up a bit. This is annoying, not a crisis.

  1. Land lines have their uses.

I used to keep a 1970s Western Electric touch-tone – red, of course – on the shelf by the TV. Ringer’s disconnected, but it can check dial tone and make calls just fine, even if the power’s down in the whole neighborhood, as long as the wire’s intact.

Of course, now that I’ve gone fiber-optic, it’s in a box in the garage … because if the block is dark, the fiber repeaters are good for a couple hours, then nada… and the cell tower backups are better.

Suggest a trip to eBay or Amazon and see what you can find.
